The Neighbour Challenge

Week #1

Question:  What are the names of your neighbors?

Challenge:  Draw a diagram of your street with each house represented by a square.  Now label as many houses as you can by family name.  (If you’re really brave, draw the surrounding blocks as well!)

Respond back and I will post week two next week!

Uh Oh. 6 out of 11 isn't so good. To be fair though, I know almost all of their first names. Family names are tough to remember!

I know most of our neighbours by first and last name though the last half of my block heading north is a bit iffy.  We wave and speak and loaned our whellbarrow out to them this weekend but we still don't know their names!  I will figure that out this week!

I love this challenge idea!

An interesting story I thought I would share from a street I know.  A few years back, this street was a typical small town north american street where people would come and go with a wave but they didn't really know each other. 

Then it seemed to all happen at once, the men started to pass away.  They were all at different ages and stages in their lives but within one year 6 men died leaving their grieving widows behind.  Out of a sense of concern and care, people came out of their homes and offered hugs, meals and a sense of shared experience. 

That was years ago, but ever since these widows gather once a month for a meal, they share lawn cutting services, meals and a very real sense of knowing your neighbours with each other.

I'm really embarrassed to say that it wasn't until I decided to do this challenge that I realized I don't know the names of anyone who lives on my street! I am going to change that immediately!
